Parish Education
Average Sunday School attendance
at Immanuel is approximately 75 students during the school year, with adults comprising about one-third of the group. The '97-'98
school year saw eight Sundays with 90 or more attending. Sunday School is held year-round, with an average attendance this past
summer of 34 students - over half being adults.
Pastor Gentz summed up the importance of Christian education in his annual report to the
congregation in November. He said, "Don't ever lose your sense of awe and wonder at the written Word! There are many who fall
away because they don't challenge their minds this way. We are being challenged on all sides as Christians today, with relativism,
which says there are no authorities for truth, and with false notions about the Bible, especially from popular TV programs as well as a
growing army of millennium harum-scarum preachers. We need all you teachers and all you students to keep us searching for understanding
as Karl Barth said, '...with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other.'"
