Small Group Ministry at MLC

Small groups are common throughout Scripture, from Moses dividing the leadership of the people into smaller groups to Jesus calling the 12 disciples. The book of Acts and the Pastoral letters in the New Testament speak of the importance of small house churches as the Church at large began to grow. These small groups had a particular purpose. They were also part of a larger whole; existing as a way to minister within and to the larger Church. Small Group Ministry is not new; but what we have begun to consider what it could look like in the 21st century. More specifically we need to ask, with the help of God, what it could look like at Moxham Lutheran Church.

The value of small group ministry is that it builds and strengthens relationships among God’s people. It is easier to get to know one another in a group of 6 or 8 people in someone’s living room than in the midst of a much larger group. It is our hope that we can develop a small group ministry that helps people to grow in faith and share the love of God in a meaningful way.

There are some key components to faithful small group ministry and these will guide us in developing this ministry: (1.) keep Christ at the center, (2.) provide mutual love and support, (3.) remain accountable to the congregation as a whole, and (4.) practice invitation and hospitality. Paying attention to these components will help us to build relationship with God, within each small group, within the congregation as a whole and with our neighbors.

There can be several types of small groups. A small group may have a ministry or task as its focus. Another type has a focus on mutual support with a group coming together around a common life experience. A third focus may be spiritual growth with Bible study as the central activity in a meeting. Each type is grounded in prayer and is informed by Scripture. We will encourage each group to do some form of outreach ministry at some point during their time together.

As we move forward we will provide training and support for those who will host and facilitate the small groups. It is our hope that this ministry will enrich the faith life of those who call Moxham Lutheran home. Watch the weekly and future newsletters for more information.

Camp Sequanota : This year the church will contribute $75.00 towards the camp fee for each MLC camper. Please contact the church office.
