"My Autobiography"
by Brandis Townsend, grade 8

I was born in Chicago in 1986. At the age of three, I was diagnosed with Sickle Cell. Little did the doctor know I had it when I was born. But my life had to go on.

When I turned three, the doctors had more bad news. They told my mom that I would not live to be five years old. My mom was very hurt. Once again my life had to go on.

My disease soon started to kick in, but I lived to the age of five. Soon I had to go back to the doctor. Then he told me I shouldn't live to the age of thirteen. But my family stayed in prayer.

At the age of six I started kindergarten at Our Lady of the Westside.School. I attended Our Lady from kindergarten until fifth grade. During that year I met many friends.

Soon I came here to St. Paul where I also have many friends.

When I was thirteen, that wasn't a good year for me because I was in the hospital for a while. I was worried about if I was going to live.

The doctors also said that I would never be able to dance due to my Sickle Cell. But I became a praise dancer anyway. I became a part of Brand New Life Praise Dance Ministry.

On February 10, 1999, I turned thirteen.

Now I'm not supposed to live to be nineteen, but look how far I've come. I'm no longer going to care what the doctors say but what God says.
